Bound By Blood (A Night Shift Novella)
By Margo Bond Collins
BBBeBookAmazon
Sometimes the monsters in the night are real.
Sometimes they live right next door.

As a child, Halili Banta ignored her grandmother’s cryptic warnings not to make friends with children outside their Filipino community in Houston. But she preferred to become a “real” American, down to the Americanization of her name, Lili. When many of those other children fell ill, Lili vowed to focus on learning everything she could about Western medicine, ignoring the whispers in her community that a vampiric aswang walked among them.

Now, as an adult and a medical doctor, Lili has returned to Houston to work for the Quarantine Station of the Center for Disease Control—but she is plagued by dark, bloody dreams that consume her nights and haunt her days. As a strange illness once again sweeps through the city, leaving hundreds of children ill and several dead, Lili races against the clock to find its source, and possibly even a cure.

But in order to save the city, she must first embrace her Filipino heritage, and acknowledge a sinister truth: A monster stalks the night—and it might be closer than she ever expected….

By Perri Forrest
10624821_535069593297040_5047846246980577913_n

Isa: Gift of the Baloma is a fantasy tale created from a myth that derives from the Trobriand islands (today officially known as the Kiriwina Islands). Isa is the beautifully tortured soul who has never known love, and who has pretty much travelled through life alone. When tragic circumstances lead her into the depths of the sea, she has no idea what her fate may hold, and thus prepares for worst.

However, as in life, sometimes we have to go through our very worst to get to the place we were destines to be. Such is the case with Isa. Just when she thinks all is lost, she meets Chief Topileta, headman of the villages of the dead, and an unexpected love affair ensures. As Isa will soon find, nothing in her life stays peaceful for long, and before she knows it, she is separated from the only person to ever care for her. When tragedy strikes and Isa finds herself awake after two years of falling into a deep sleep, she is surprised to find that all thoughts are still with the man she has not forgotten. But has he forgotten her? Will he come for her? Will she find love again?

This is only the beginning of Isa’s story, in the full length novel that is set for 2015 release, readers will find out the many layers of Isa and be able to journey with her as she finds out about her lineage and the family she was sure did not exist.

Description:

If you’ve already read Damaged Girls I, then these emotions should be familiar. The Damaged Girls Family & Relationship Series began with an introduction to the complex love triangle of Steven Briggs, Jillian McConnell and Jessica Rodney. In the second book of the series, Damaged Girls II, get pulled deeper into the trauma and gain valuable knowledge of why Jillian and Jessica might be such easy targets for a womanizer such as Stevie. Jillian has to come to terms with the crumbling idea of love that she desperately needed to find in Stevie. And Jessica is forced to grow up and away from the man she so badly wanted to keep forever. Stevie even realizes that he needs to get a grip on the drama he created years back; while his decisions and behaviors continue to spiral deeper into selfishness. Unfortunately, Stevie’s insatiable appetite has not diminished, only causing him to become less likeable.
Will the three ever learn? As life progresses, we must confront our past, move into our present and plan sensibly for our future. How will Stevie, Jillian and Jessica cope, when life just can’t seem to smile in favor of their original desires? Damaged Girls is not a romance novel outlined in love. It is not pleasant and idealistic, but very cruel and extremely unsavory. In fact, it is deep and rather dark at times. The story focuses on emotional, physical and sexual abuse, and how easily its effects can cause some to own the title of Damaged Girls.

Excerpt:

“Did you think seducing me would change that?” A smirk reclined across his gorgeous bronze face. “You are even more naïve than I thought.”He mocked her. Not only did she hear this, but she saw it. Her entire naked body turned crimson red from shame. She temporarily buried her head in the midst of several puffy golden pillows.

“Don’t get upset. You got what you wanted, didn’t you?” His mode was blatant and pompous. “I know I did. Thanks, Jessie.” He tapped her backside. She flipped over and lunged at him. Stevie was not surprised, so he was well prepared to fend her off with a sidestep. She crashed onto the carpeted floor with a light thump. Yet he stood over her, then reached down to offer a hand.

Dignity and false pride would not allow her to take it. She made it on her own. Jessica still had fight in her as she forced her strength. “I still own you.” The words were loud, as if volume proved their truth. Stevie’s only response was to walk towards the closet. She ran behind to pound on his back.

Upon hearing the footsteps, he spun around and captured her neck. “Didn’t you already get enough of me? Didn’t you?” Flames of hatred, and desire, reflected from his dangerous eyes. As he led her to the bed in a tight single-armed grip, he was the devil in disguise. “Leave me alone, Jessica.” He was calm, very calm. She saw this and seized on what little deceptive defense she had. Underneath his chokehold, and within her pipes, she gathered what little saliva she could and took part in a nasty trifling game. Though little shot into his face, the meaning sank in. Stevie let her go, and he stood before her, staring straight ahead.

Rather than run, hide, or cower, Jessica stood brave and tall. She took over his role and now mocked him. “You are nothing!” The words meant nothing to Jessica, but they were her only weapons at the moment. “You’re a piece of gar-bage.” The nastiness reappeared as she spat into his face. This time the liquid was potent and filled with the grime of a full day’s starvation. Satisfaction stood at the center of her skin. Her nipples stood erect—she was all too pleased with herself as she peppered him further. “Nothing!”

Jessica was fearless, and she did not expect Stevie’s next move. From far in the past, reaching through years of Spanish, Amerindian and African ancestors, Stevie called up his heritage. He reached into the heart of who he was, from his past, and presented the strength of every fight his nations had ever endured. Stevie not only slapped Jessica clear into the wall, he also placed the box of a lifetime on the right side of her beautiful face.

But those plans disintegrate when she walks in on a vampire draining the blood from her fiancé Greg. Horrified, she screams and runs–not away from the vampire, but toward it, brandishing a wooden letter opener.

As she slams the improvised stake into the vampire’s heart, a team of black-clad men bursts into the apartment. Turning around to face them, Elle discovers that Greg’s body is gone—and her perfect life falls apart.

A Top-10 Preditors and Editors Readers’ Poll Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Novel
Legally Undead - #10 Science Fiction and Fantasy
Excerpt
The worst thing about vampires is
that they’re dead. That whole wanting to suck your blood business runs a close
second, but for sheer creepiness, it’s the dead bit that gets me every time.
They’re up and walking around and talking and sucking blood, but they’re dead.
And then there’s the whole terminology problem–how can you kill something
that’s already dead? It’s just wrong.
I was twenty-four the first time I .
. . destroyed? dispatched? . . . a vampire. That’s when I found out that all
the books and movies are wrong. When you stick a wooden stake into their
hearts, vampires don’t disintegrate into dust. They don’t explode. They don’t
spew blood everywhere. They just look surprised, groan, and collapse into a
pile of corpse. But at least they lie still then, like corpses are supposed to.
Since that first kill (I might as
well use the word–there really isn’t a better one), I’ve discovered that only
if you’re lucky do vampires look surprised before they groan and fall down. If
you’re unlucky and miss the heart, they look angry. And then they fight.
There are the other usual ways to
kill vampires, of course, but these other ways can get a bit complicated.
Vampires are notoriously difficult to trick into sunlight. They have an uncanny
ability to sense when there’s any sunlight within miles of them, and they’re
awfully good at hiding from it. Holy water doesn’t kill them; it just distracts
them for a while, and then they get that angry look again. And it takes a
pretty big blade to cut off someone’s head–even an already dead someone–and
carrying a great big knife around New York City, even the Bronx, is a sure way
to get arrested. Nope, pointy sticks are the best way to go, all the way
around.
My own pointy stick is actually more
of a little knife with wood inlay on the blade–the metal makes it slide in
easier. I had the knife specially made by an old Italian guy in just about the
only ratty part of Westchester, north of the city. I tried to order one off the
internet, but it turns out that while it’s easy to find wood-inlay handles, the
blades themselves tend to be metal. Fat lot those people know.
But I wasn’t thinking any of this
when I pulled the knife out of the body on the ground. I was thinking something
more along the lines of “Oh, bloody hell. Not again.”

Excerpt:

I was in no mental state to be writing, and I knew it. But writing was my passion and my refuge and when all else failed, only it could lift my mood. But somehow, the depression I’d slid back into as soon as my plane hit US soil had superseded the healing effects of writing. Sitting on my computer screen was not the elegant string of words I was known for, but a string of obscenities. Nothing but angry words lined the page.

I sighed, closed my eyes, and prayed for a brief moment. Then I clicked on the iTunes icon and began to scroll through my music, hoping that a soothing tune would inspire me. Why the hell did I own so many stupid love songs? I scrolled and scrolled until my only option for music was a Lil’ Wayne album that Quincy had downloaded to my computer, and I couldn’t even stand to listen to that because it reminded me of him.

I stared at the songs listed on the computer: “What You Won’t Do For Love,” “Can’t Hide Love,” “Love And Happiness,” “Sweet Love,”  “When We Get Married,” and the one that really sent me over the edge: “All True Man.” That did it. Next thing I knew, I was deleting my entire iTunes library. Then I deleted the page of obscenities.

Then I unplugged the laptop and threw it across the room. Somehow it landed on the couch and just as I was walking over to it with intentions of thrusting it against the wall, my doorbell rang. At first I stood there as if I didn’t know what to do. Then I slowly made my way to the door, smoothing my hand over the raggedy braids on my head. I peered through the peep hole and felt my blood instantly begin to boil. I snatched the door open and shrieked, “What the hell do you want?!”

About the Book2

Anyone can say they’re completely fulfilled with life. They can say all the right words and even behave as if not a darn thing is wrong even when their insides are hollowed out. And eventually they’ll search, dig, pry and perhaps bargain for a chance at satisfaction. If I can’t be satisfied, then I guess I’ll settle for what I can get.
Right?
Maybe?

~Jezebel Jones~

Jezebel Jones and Jason Marks have been the rock in each other’s lives for years. No one knows Jezebel as well as Jason, and vice versa. As Jezebel comes to terms with being alone, she decides to settle for her ever-faithful friend. Although she has never loved him romantically, Jezebel wants to make a try for a real relationship with her friend. This isn’t a natural thing, just something she is reasoning through. She can’t help but wonder if their friendship will be able to withstand the changes.

And just when Jezebel least expects to be swept away be anyone, she meets Aidan Broder. He stimulates her mind, body and soul. Even as Jezebel gets closer to him, she’s still afraid to dive in and finds herself in the middle of two men. In the end, Jezebel will have to make a choice between a man that has always loved her and a man that wants to love her.

Author’s Note:

I’ve never been one to believe in love at first sight. As I’ve grown older and become engaged in life, I find myself seeking this happily ever after that so many people talk about. In many ways, I was once Jezebel – unsure of what the future would hold and still hoping for something, anything that would allow me to believe. Though many of us don’t know what that something might be, we do know that we want more. Jezebel Jones is about letting go in order to truly love.

EXCERPT2
“Forgive me if I come across as a skeptic. I’ve never been wowed or swept off my feet.”
“Don’t you believe in love at first sight,” he was still in possession of her fingers and had been kissing them in between words. When he finally pulled away, she felt like something was suddenly missing.
“Love at first sight is a pleasing theory.” Jezebel thought through her answer. She was afraid to admit that she hoped in love at first sight, or love at all.
What if she decided to hope and got her heart broken?
What if the belief tricked her, and even came out of her mouth?
What if she started to lose control over such erratic emotions and lost the fight?
What if this love turned into heartbreak?
These questions plagued her mind. Her heart sped up. A single teardrop rolled down her cheek before she could stop it.
Aidan noticed. He wasted no time in wiping it away.
“Don’t be afraid to give it a try,” he encouraged.
“You have all the best slogans. In fact, you’re always quick to encourage me. But obviously you’d be the one to benefit.”
Their drinks and appetizers saved her. She knew that his response would be clever and thoughtful. And maybe even force her to admit that, for a man she’d just met, Jezebel was already smitten.

About the Book

Be warned… Romance is not at the heart of Damaged Girls. This series revolves around contemporary issues in families and relationships.

Steven Briggs is thirty-five, gorgeous and partially successful as an auto shop owner-wannabe. He loves women – young women to be exact. Moreover, he is not above manipulating any situation to have the women he wants. Independent twenty year old Jillian McConnell was once lucky to be a part of his world. Since Stevie was the only man to ever shatter her rough exterior, he knows that she would always keep coming back for more. But Jillian is only good enough some of the time. When the sensual Jessica Rodney comes of age, Stevie is enthralled. He shuns the older part time model, for the time being. But is Jessica’s liveliness enough to sustain Stevie? Or will he keep turning back to the sensible relationship of his past, since he can always make Jillian believe that she should readily be a willing participant in this triangle. Damaged Girls is a complicated novel about the choices and outcomes, associated with the mistakes we make over time.

Excerpt

Sadie still battled with ghastly memories of shame. These were constantly locked away but, when given the opportunity, their reign confounded her world. At times, her life was insufferable. But she did not want to make this about herself.

Sadie reasoned, “Baby, I can’t say that your father’s worry is baseless.” She paused to reflect. Jessica made an attempt to cut her off. Sadie scowled. “I’m nervous and unsure of what this man could possibly want with you. However . . . however, I also know you’re strong-headed. I even know that you’re not caving on this fight. Neither is your father.”

“But I’m old enough to make this decision.”

“We’re still responsible for you.”

Tears began to flow once more, by both women. Still, neither could muster up the courage to despise the other for her view or opposition. And although each motive was clear, this was a fight that Sadie and Jessica did not want to endure alone.

Trusting in the only insult capable of weakening her ally further, Jessica hammered once more: “You know I’m not above walking away, Sadie. When I’m finished with school, I’ll leave. Then you won’t have me in your life again. It’ll just be you and Roddy.”

She allowed the threat to fester. Sadie could never do without her—this she knew. And though the pitiless girl was laying the path for greater heartache, she cuddled her mother all the same.

Sadie sobbed.

Jessica reluctantly joined in.

Mother and daughter wept for more than fifteen minutes. Once the barrels were drained, Sadie finally spoke up, but this time for a different cause. “Don’t leave me, baby.”

“Then don’t ask me to give up on the only man that I have or will ever love.”

“You don’t know that, my child.”

“Did you know it when you fell for Roddy? Did you know he was the only man you would ever love?”

“Always have.” True to her every being, her response held conviction as the sobbing returned.

“Ma, I’ve never asked you for more than I deserved. You know that. I deserve Stevie. Your husband doesn’t deserve you. Your husband is irrational and selfish. I love Roddy because he’s my father, but I hate him for the disgrace he’s brought on you. Let me be your strength. Stand with me, Ma. Let’s make sure he never ruins my life.”

The elderly woman caught her child just as she was ready to crumble. Jessica collapsed in intense cries and allowed her mother to recapture her role once more.

Mixed emotions surged between the two. They did not want to fight. Jessica wanted what she wanted, while Sadie wanted the happiness that life should have always given her. She prayed for more than milk and honey, more than riches untold—in fact, she needed to feel treasured.

He held the power!

The way he spoke to her that day rang in her ear. She shrunk against herself remembering how she felt—the humiliation, the tears, the emotion. The trip to San Diego where she couldn’t immediately give herself over to Brandon because of the hurt she felt.

She was on autopilot. She was hot and she was bothered and there was no quick fix in sight. Since she and Brandon had parted ways, she had no one on radar to put her out of her misery. Her vibrator was a good source, but somehow with hours left to get through the day, she didn’t think it would help. That was way too many hours off.

There was a rising urge coming from between her legs that wouldn’t go away no matter how tightly she gripped her thighs together. It was unbearable. It had total control over her thought process, as well as her actions.

When London found herself headed back up the elevators and toward Mercedes, the lie fell from her lips so easily, it surprised even her.

“Hi again, Mercedes,” she said. She wore a nervous smile. “Can you please ring Carter for me? I forgot an item on the agenda that’s of the utmost importance.”

“Of course.”

Four minutes later, Carter appeared in the area behind reception and signaled towards London to come to his office.Once they were inside, he appeared slightly nervous, and stood near the door running his hand through his short, dark waves. “What…did you come back to rip me a new one?”

London didn’t immediately respond. Instead, she walked to the bar and poured a double shot of Vodka. She tipped the glass upward, allowing the warmth to flow through to her chest.

“Whoa!” he exclaimed. “You might wanna slow down, London. I don’t stock the cheap stuff.”

Still no response. She boldly sized him up as she poured another shot.

Suave and fucking debonair, Carter Hampton. Why do I want you in a way that I know I shouldn’t?

Carter crossed his arms across his chest as he watched London take down her shot. She replaced her glass on the bar’s surface.

“Should I pour me one too and join the party? Will this entire exchange be one-sided? How much of this do you—”

“Lock the door…” London instructed.

His eyes got wide for a brief second as though he had heard her incorrectly.

“Lock the door…” she repeated.

Doing as he was told, Carter turned around slowly to adjust the lock, then turned back in her direction. Once the door was secure, with no chance of surprise interruptions, she asked: “Are you coming?”

Everything from there happened quickly because she feared that she would come to her senses and leave without getting what she came for.

Down the corridor, past his office, was something that she hadn’t even expected—a fully furnished bedroom, with big screen television, small stereo system, full bathroom, and king sized bed.

“Don’t get shy on me now, Carter. Come here. This is what you wanted, right?” She unzipped the side of her dress and allowed it to fall to the ground of his bedroom floor. “I mean the way you look at me,” she said, removing her matching bra and panty set. “The way you kissed me not too long ago…” She walked toward him and removed his blazer, tie and all the other blockages.

When she pulled down his boxer briefs, she nodded in approval. “Yes, even better than I expected,” she said stroking his protruding manhood.

She stepped back from where he stood and moved to the center of his bed ready to receive him, “This is what you want, right?”

It was what he wanted, and without a second thought Carter made his move. Face first, he wasted no time going straight to dessert where he teased, licked, sucked, and devoured every inch of her sweetness. Her cove met his mouth with frenzied thrusts as she lost herself in the thrill of him.

It was only once her cries simmered that she realized she was coming down from a high—the most intense orgasm she had ever had the pleasure of. Around them both, the room became eerily quiet. And although she resided in the realm of euphoria, the reality of what happened hit her like a ton of bricks.

Her body was thankful. Her mind was racing.

The blog opened a whole new world for Perri and served as a place she could express candidly,  about life. When her blog was discovered and she began receiving compliments on not just her  candor, but on her writing style as well, it fueled the fire, and thoughts of penning a novel  resurfaced.

And that she did.

Excerpt

After taking notes, he walked into another room, a bedroom, to catch his breath and inhale cleaner air. Not that it was much better. There were bloodstains on the floor and across the bed. By now the odor clung to his nostrils but at least there were no flies in here.

He looked around for something, anything that gave a hint that he was here last night. He checked in the closet and took in the bloody sheets. As he bent down to check under the bed, he heard a peculiar sound. He stood up to get a better idea of what it was. It was a scratching noise of some kind coming from inside the room. It sounded familiar but he didn’t know from where or why it was recognizable. Peering around, he couldn’t find the source in any direction.

Without warning, a blinding, flashing memory of screaming, running and piercing noise took hold of him. He grabbed his head, squeezing it, trying to stop the distorted thoughts. His eyes were blinking uncontrollably. A sharp twinge ran up his back. It was so excruciating that his muscles contracted, contorting with a loss of control. He tried to remain silent, though to no avail. It felt like someone was cutting him open from the back.

Just as suddenly as it began, it stopped.

Micco found himself on the floor, shirt drenched with perspiration, panting like his heart was about to jump out from his chest.

    Holy shit, what was that?

He stayed there on the cold hardwood floor for a minute, gathering his breath and thoughts. He’d never experienced anything like that before. The full memories were gone but he did recall the screaming.

A memory from last nightPlease don’t make me have to go through that pain every time I remember something.

Rolling over to get up, he saw a shirt tucked in the corner. It looked familiar; it was his own…

I may be a nurse by profession but an author by heart. I have been writing stories for many years, both in my head and on paper because I’ve always had a love for books ever since spending Saturdays at the library as a young child. Within a book, the mind can travel to worlds of the imagination and the beyond.

I finally took the plunge and published my first novel last year, a young adult urban fantasy titled Connor and two adult horror short stories tit led Madame Lilly, Voodoo Priestess and Madame Lilly, Voodoo Priestess: Soulless . Micco, Anguta’s Reign, a psychological thriller, was released November 3rd 2014. They are just the beginning of many more books to come as I stay locked up in my office in Colorado spinning more tales.
