Description:

If you’ve already read Damaged Girls I, then these emotions should be familiar. The Damaged Girls Family & Relationship Series began with an introduction to the complex love triangle of Steven Briggs, Jillian McConnell and Jessica Rodney. In the second book of the series, Damaged Girls II, get pulled deeper into the trauma and gain valuable knowledge of why Jillian and Jessica might be such easy targets for a womanizer such as Stevie. Jillian has to come to terms with the crumbling idea of love that she desperately needed to find in Stevie. And Jessica is forced to grow up and away from the man she so badly wanted to keep forever. Stevie even realizes that he needs to get a grip on the drama he created years back; while his decisions and behaviors continue to spiral deeper into selfishness. Unfortunately, Stevie’s insatiable appetite has not diminished, only causing him to become less likeable.
Will the three ever learn? As life progresses, we must confront our past, move into our present and plan sensibly for our future. How will Stevie, Jillian and Jessica cope, when life just can’t seem to smile in favor of their original desires? Damaged Girls is not a romance novel outlined in love. It is not pleasant and idealistic, but very cruel and extremely unsavory. In fact, it is deep and rather dark at times. The story focuses on emotional, physical and sexual abuse, and how easily its effects can cause some to own the title of Damaged Girls.

Excerpt:

“Did you think seducing me would change that?” A smirk reclined across his gorgeous bronze face. “You are even more naïve than I thought.”He mocked her. Not only did she hear this, but she saw it. Her entire naked body turned crimson red from shame. She temporarily buried her head in the midst of several puffy golden pillows.

“Don’t get upset. You got what you wanted, didn’t you?” His mode was blatant and pompous. “I know I did. Thanks, Jessie.” He tapped her backside. She flipped over and lunged at him. Stevie was not surprised, so he was well prepared to fend her off with a sidestep. She crashed onto the carpeted floor with a light thump. Yet he stood over her, then reached down to offer a hand.

Dignity and false pride would not allow her to take it. She made it on her own. Jessica still had fight in her as she forced her strength. “I still own you.” The words were loud, as if volume proved their truth. Stevie’s only response was to walk towards the closet. She ran behind to pound on his back.

Upon hearing the footsteps, he spun around and captured her neck. “Didn’t you already get enough of me? Didn’t you?” Flames of hatred, and desire, reflected from his dangerous eyes. As he led her to the bed in a tight single-armed grip, he was the devil in disguise. “Leave me alone, Jessica.” He was calm, very calm. She saw this and seized on what little deceptive defense she had. Underneath his chokehold, and within her pipes, she gathered what little saliva she could and took part in a nasty trifling game. Though little shot into his face, the meaning sank in. Stevie let her go, and he stood before her, staring straight ahead.

Rather than run, hide, or cower, Jessica stood brave and tall. She took over his role and now mocked him. “You are nothing!” The words meant nothing to Jessica, but they were her only weapons at the moment. “You’re a piece of gar-bage.” The nastiness reappeared as she spat into his face. This time the liquid was potent and filled with the grime of a full day’s starvation. Satisfaction stood at the center of her skin. Her nipples stood erect—she was all too pleased with herself as she peppered him further. “Nothing!”

Jessica was fearless, and she did not expect Stevie’s next move. From far in the past, reaching through years of Spanish, Amerindian and African ancestors, Stevie called up his heritage. He reached into the heart of who he was, from his past, and presented the strength of every fight his nations had ever endured. Stevie not only slapped Jessica clear into the wall, he also placed the box of a lifetime on the right side of her beautiful face.

About the Book2

Anyone can say they’re completely fulfilled with life. They can say all the right words and even behave as if not a darn thing is wrong even when their insides are hollowed out. And eventually they’ll search, dig, pry and perhaps bargain for a chance at satisfaction. If I can’t be satisfied, then I guess I’ll settle for what I can get.
Right?
Maybe?

~Jezebel Jones~

Jezebel Jones and Jason Marks have been the rock in each other’s lives for years. No one knows Jezebel as well as Jason, and vice versa. As Jezebel comes to terms with being alone, she decides to settle for her ever-faithful friend. Although she has never loved him romantically, Jezebel wants to make a try for a real relationship with her friend. This isn’t a natural thing, just something she is reasoning through. She can’t help but wonder if their friendship will be able to withstand the changes.

And just when Jezebel least expects to be swept away be anyone, she meets Aidan Broder. He stimulates her mind, body and soul. Even as Jezebel gets closer to him, she’s still afraid to dive in and finds herself in the middle of two men. In the end, Jezebel will have to make a choice between a man that has always loved her and a man that wants to love her.

Author’s Note:

I’ve never been one to believe in love at first sight. As I’ve grown older and become engaged in life, I find myself seeking this happily ever after that so many people talk about. In many ways, I was once Jezebel – unsure of what the future would hold and still hoping for something, anything that would allow me to believe. Though many of us don’t know what that something might be, we do know that we want more. Jezebel Jones is about letting go in order to truly love.

EXCERPT2
“Forgive me if I come across as a skeptic. I’ve never been wowed or swept off my feet.”
“Don’t you believe in love at first sight,” he was still in possession of her fingers and had been kissing them in between words. When he finally pulled away, she felt like something was suddenly missing.
“Love at first sight is a pleasing theory.” Jezebel thought through her answer. She was afraid to admit that she hoped in love at first sight, or love at all.
What if she decided to hope and got her heart broken?
What if the belief tricked her, and even came out of her mouth?
What if she started to lose control over such erratic emotions and lost the fight?
What if this love turned into heartbreak?
These questions plagued her mind. Her heart sped up. A single teardrop rolled down her cheek before she could stop it.
Aidan noticed. He wasted no time in wiping it away.
“Don’t be afraid to give it a try,” he encouraged.
“You have all the best slogans. In fact, you’re always quick to encourage me. But obviously you’d be the one to benefit.”
Their drinks and appetizers saved her. She knew that his response would be clever and thoughtful. And maybe even force her to admit that, for a man she’d just met, Jezebel was already smitten.

About the Book

Be warned… Romance is not at the heart of Damaged Girls. This series revolves around contemporary issues in families and relationships.

Steven Briggs is thirty-five, gorgeous and partially successful as an auto shop owner-wannabe. He loves women – young women to be exact. Moreover, he is not above manipulating any situation to have the women he wants. Independent twenty year old Jillian McConnell was once lucky to be a part of his world. Since Stevie was the only man to ever shatter her rough exterior, he knows that she would always keep coming back for more. But Jillian is only good enough some of the time. When the sensual Jessica Rodney comes of age, Stevie is enthralled. He shuns the older part time model, for the time being. But is Jessica’s liveliness enough to sustain Stevie? Or will he keep turning back to the sensible relationship of his past, since he can always make Jillian believe that she should readily be a willing participant in this triangle. Damaged Girls is a complicated novel about the choices and outcomes, associated with the mistakes we make over time.

Excerpt

Sadie still battled with ghastly memories of shame. These were constantly locked away but, when given the opportunity, their reign confounded her world. At times, her life was insufferable. But she did not want to make this about herself.

Sadie reasoned, “Baby, I can’t say that your father’s worry is baseless.” She paused to reflect. Jessica made an attempt to cut her off. Sadie scowled. “I’m nervous and unsure of what this man could possibly want with you. However . . . however, I also know you’re strong-headed. I even know that you’re not caving on this fight. Neither is your father.”

“But I’m old enough to make this decision.”

“We’re still responsible for you.”

Tears began to flow once more, by both women. Still, neither could muster up the courage to despise the other for her view or opposition. And although each motive was clear, this was a fight that Sadie and Jessica did not want to endure alone.

Trusting in the only insult capable of weakening her ally further, Jessica hammered once more: “You know I’m not above walking away, Sadie. When I’m finished with school, I’ll leave. Then you won’t have me in your life again. It’ll just be you and Roddy.”

She allowed the threat to fester. Sadie could never do without her—this she knew. And though the pitiless girl was laying the path for greater heartache, she cuddled her mother all the same.

Sadie sobbed.

Jessica reluctantly joined in.

Mother and daughter wept for more than fifteen minutes. Once the barrels were drained, Sadie finally spoke up, but this time for a different cause. “Don’t leave me, baby.”

“Then don’t ask me to give up on the only man that I have or will ever love.”

“You don’t know that, my child.”

“Did you know it when you fell for Roddy? Did you know he was the only man you would ever love?”

“Always have.” True to her every being, her response held conviction as the sobbing returned.

“Ma, I’ve never asked you for more than I deserved. You know that. I deserve Stevie. Your husband doesn’t deserve you. Your husband is irrational and selfish. I love Roddy because he’s my father, but I hate him for the disgrace he’s brought on you. Let me be your strength. Stand with me, Ma. Let’s make sure he never ruins my life.”

The elderly woman caught her child just as she was ready to crumble. Jessica collapsed in intense cries and allowed her mother to recapture her role once more.

Mixed emotions surged between the two. They did not want to fight. Jessica wanted what she wanted, while Sadie wanted the happiness that life should have always given her. She prayed for more than milk and honey, more than riches untold—in fact, she needed to feel treasured.

Sunday Reading with “Loving Nate” by Janice Ross

Loving Nate - Nice

LOVING NATE

The Storyline of Loving Nate

Loving Nate is a story about a young woman who falls in love when she should’ve been standing in love. I open up this tale with an acknowledgement/dedication to someone named “Superman”. A bit of advice that I received from this man was to never fall in love – stand in love. Over the years, I’ve considered this lesson of sorts, even thinking back to when I was in a similar situation like Leah.

Leah meets the perfect man, when she literally runs into Nate. She is swept away and is beyond help. Sadly, Nate knows that Leah is weak for him. He takes advantage of his effect on her, as she allows him to drift in and out of her life. Nate is the type of man that knows how to carry himself with a confidence level of perfection. He is totally irresistible! Leah is easily led.

My personal experience was not as shameful as Leah; however, I’ve known a version of Nate. Like Leah, I marveled at how impressive his charms were and lusted for his excellence. Where my experiences part ways with Leah is that I eventually pulled away when I realized that this man might have a hidden life. I paid attention to the red flags, putting an end to a situation that was sure to rip out my soul.

I always wondered what would’ve happened if I had remained in Leah’s situation. Therefore, Leah’s journey is a hypothetical journey. I also considered something that many women might contemplate – what ifs. After taking Leah on a roller coaster romance, I offer an alternative ending for reflection sakes – walk away or fight for love. After you’ve given your all to a relationship, do you ever consider the pros and cons of leaving, especially if total heartbreak seems inevitable? That is at the heart of Loving Nate.

About the Book2

Loving Nate is Leah’s story of falling in love with Mr. Perfect. Leah falls fast and hard, losing all sense of reasoning. Love can do that to a gal, especially when the guy is as smooth as Nathan Moore. Loving Nate is about Leah’s journey of falling in love, when she should have been standing in love.

 Author’s Note

I’ve decided to provide two very different endings to this novella. Have you ever made a decision and wondered whether or not it was the right choice? Or perhaps you made the right choice because you knew that the alternative would’ve been disastrous? This is my gift to readers. Regardless of Leah’s final choice, I wanted readers to be able to reflect on the possibilities.

EXCERPT2

I was the one waiting around, hoping that this time Nate wouldn’t leave. I spent so many hours staring at him, while he slept. Wondering if tomorrow would be the day he’d disappear, once again. Crying and desperately wanting Nate to stick around forever.

When you love someone, there’s no switch that can be turned off and on. The fire doesn’t disintegrate and ignite so easily. Nate is capable of this, but I’m not. Chloe still warns me—calls me a fool, tells me that I’m an idiot to stick around. Nate gave me one small dosage and I became addicted. Now I just don’t know how to walk away. But I do know that I have to. And even if I am able to leave, I can’t imagine that it’s humanly possible to ever stop loving Nate.

This time, I’m going to make the effort. I don’t know that I’ll be able to stay away or avoid him if he does try to track me down. As easy as it might be, maybe this will give him the initiative to leave me too. Losing him and leaving him go hand in hand. After all, this is the man that I’ve loved. My devotion to him has been unconditional.

I think he senses what I’m preparing to do. His hands are squeezing my sides, reaching behind my back, staking claim. But I know that if I don’t leave now, there’s a real possibility that I’ll be alone again. Isn’t it better to be alone by choice, than alone and rejected?

Eventually I’m hoping to sneak out of the bed, move out of his grip. God, it hurts. If my tears could only wash away the shame I feel when he disappears, maybe it would be easier to cope. But they only remind me that I miss him, need him, crave him . . . And he’s squeezing tighter, pressing against my nakedness. Is he gonna start this again? I can’t let him feel the moisture on my cheeks. Oh my gosh, it’s dripping down his arms.

The clock is blinking. I have less than thirty minutes before his alarm goes off. I wanna be out of his apartment within the next fifteen minutes, out of his life, and out of his control. And, as I strain to flex my back, without calling attention to my escape, I cringe.

There should be more difficult choices in life. I’ve been able to conquer mountains, pound down adversity, extinguish flames, and say no when everyone else says yes. When it comes to Nathan Moore, however, I’m spineless.

SOUL TIES: BE CAREFUL WHO YOU BED AND WED…

 by Angelia Vernon Menchan

Chapter One

Two Years Earlier…

Walking into the nightclub, Fletcher Mitchell could feel the pulsing music. He had decided to attend graduate school at USC and was enjoying the left coast. He was an east coast man in his blood but after breaking up with his longtime girlfriend he needed distance. Los Angeles was a long way from North Florida. After graduating from the University of North Florida he had worked for a few years at United Parcel Service because they had paid his tuition. The management training program was good but he wanted more. When USC accepted him and his company provided him with a transfer that paid more, he was all in. The company had found him a great roommate who was also a co-worker and fellow student, Rashad Ferguson.

He liked Rashad but Rashad was a ministerial student and a bit too preachy. He had heard enough about God and sin from his parents. His parents had become staunch Christians about ten years earlier when he turned fifteen and for all his high school years it had been God this and God that. Though he moved out at nineteen, they still always referenced God when he saw or spoke to them. He loved his parents dearly but he was tired of it, besides they seemed to have forgotten they weren’t always saved. Richard and Cynthia had once never set foot in a church. He found that hypocritical. Shaking those thoughts from his head, he started moving to the music. He had minored in music production and he knew he had some moves. He also knew that being six-two and muscular and slim the women were watching him. His smooth, dark brown skin and short fro didn’t hurt either.

Deneisha Young watched Fletcher from across the floor. She loved the sensual way he danced and wanted to know him. Other than the dark skin, he was her type. She had always been attracted to lighter skinned men like her dad, but there was something about Fletcher that held her attention. Starting her own dance she danced up close to him, with her eyes closed and hips swaying. Taking in her curvaceous body and pretty face, Fletcher touched her lightly, causing her eyes to open.

“Let’s show them how it’s done.”

Smiling, she followed him to the floor and they danced through four songs. Drenched with sweat, he took her hand leading her to the bar.

“What’s your poison?” He asked in a deep, sexy voice. He wanted to kiss the mole beneath her eye.

“Tall, dark, handsome men who can dance.” Grinning down at her, he winked.

“To drink in a glass.” Her tittering laughter pierced him.

“In that case I will take a margarita. Tequila makes me crazy.”

Loving the sound of that, he ordered a margarita for her and Heineken for himself. He stared at her while they sipped. There was something hypnotic about her stance and her eyes.

“So what’s your name lady and what do you do?”

“I’m Deneisha Young but my friends call me Neisha.”

“Then Deneisha it is. I’m a business student and work for UPS as an IT manager.”

“I work as a paraprofessional at USC. I was in the military for three years, that’s how I ended up out here. My folks live in Alabama. My dad is a music producer.” His ears perked at her words.

“Really? That’s cool. I write music in my spare time, I also play a few instruments. What else do you do?”

“I’m a dancer!”

She started dancing as if moving up and down an imaginary pole.

“A stripper?”

He started humming the strains to ‘I’m in love with a stripper’ by T-Pain. She giggled again at his words and in tune humming.

“No, but for the right man, I am willing.”

For the remainder of the night they danced and flirted. He knew he could take her home but he wasn’t ready yet. She wasn’t his usual type. Physically, she pretty much had it nailed but he really loved brainy women and she seemed pretty content to be a Para-pro.

Deniesha thought about Fletcher on the way home. Her friend Karen hadn’t been feeling him and was making her opinion known.

“I didn’t care for him. He had the arrogant, stuck up air about him. That boy from the middle class, slumming, with the hood chicks’thing.”

“Karen, how did you read all that into it. I spent three hours with the man and didn’t get all that.”

“I know the type. He’s at USC and has all the bougie signs. I am sure he left some girl back home who he is in love with who will have his babies.”

Deneisha’s eyes met her friends and immediately she felt enraged. She got tired of being told she wasn’t good enough. She came from a good family, her mom being a paranoid schizophrenic, notwithstanding. She furiously rolled her eyes and continued staring out the window. She really wanted to slap Karen or spit in her face.

Deneisha was from a long line of volatile women who dealt with everything by hitting. Her mom had been hitting and cussing at her since she was a young child. However, she would be the first one in the church, dancing and praising and damning folks to hell. Her father on the other hand was a passive man; many would call him weak; he was from a hardworking, lower-middle class family who had married her mom because she had gotten pregnant at sixteen. Rena Young was also abusive to her husband. She had been raised to believe that a woman got all of a man’s money and hit first before she could be hit and that was how they lived. Fortunately, Ron was a naturally passive man who allowed Rena full reign. He loved her and would do anything to keep her, including allowing her to poison the minds of their three daughters of which Deneisha was the youngest.

Fletcher was the only child of middle class parents who had worked towards their own version of the American Dream. They had been born of parents who wanted more for each generation and they were no different. They had been married eighteen years and Fletcher fifteen when they had bought their first home. Before that, they had lived in nice apartments in good neighborhoods. His dad worked as a postal carrier who earned a good salary and his mother was a high ranking civil servant and had a side job as a sought after cupcake artist. Several years earlier they moved into a newer home in the country and were living out their blessings as their mother called it. She had often told him God had taken care of them when they ignored him but now that they gave him praise and honor, their blessings overflowed. He had to agree with that because he had always thought they lived well, but it was nothing in comparison to how they were currently living. God or someone was blessing them.

Character Interview with Alyssa Montgomery

Ann Marie: Thank you for meeting with me, I know it’s probably a little awkward for you.

Alyssa: Yes, it is. Sorry it took me so long to answer your calls. I’m not sure I should really be talking with you. What’s this for again?

Ann Marie: This is for an article I’m writing about love and relationships, specifically between young celebrity types. I interviewed Jake Masters for this and of course I sought you out. I always like to get both sides of the story. I’m just trying to get the full scope of what it was like for him and how your relationship has affected his music.

*long silence*

Alyssa: Okay.

Ann Marie: I can see it’s true that you’re younger than him, still in high school, correct?

Alyssa: Yes.

Ann Marie: How has it been for you since he’s been on the road?

Alyssa: Well, I have my own thing going on, so I just try and live my life.

Ann Marie: Are you two together?

Alyssa: We’re friends, we love each other.

Ann Marie: So the break up was a rumor. The media is a buzz, so I have to ask.

Alyssa: Jake is touring and I’m here going to school, all I can say is what kind of relationship can you really have when two people never see each other and when there are other obstacles in the way.

Ann Marie: How do you feel about being Jake’s muse?

Alyssa: It makes me happy. It makes me miss him.

Ann Marie: Can you talk about what happened between Jake’s guitarist, Mike, and you?

Alyssa: *squirms in seat* – What is it that you want to know?

Ann Marie: What happened? I know he went to jail and the rest is rumor.

Alyssa: Mike and I were friends, we went to school together, but I really can’t talk about anything else. Maybe someday, but I’m not ready. Please don’t pressure me.

Ann Marie: Was it or is it difficult for you being the girlfriend of one of the hottest young, on the rise rock stars in the country? The heat Rita’s Revolt has is insane. How do you keep a positive attitude through it all?

Alyssa: I’m not sure. To be honest, I’m numb. I’m young and so is Jake. We have our whole lives ahead of us and I pray for him every day. Jake is my next-door neighbor who I grew up with. I care about him for real reasons, for reasons other people have no idea about. Nobody knows him like I do. Nobody will ever know him like I do, ever.
