Sizzlin’ Sample…

Loving Nate - Nice

EXCERPT2

“Hi, beautiful.” The voice that’s become a regular companion of mine, along with its owner, appears as a gift from the heavens. Cee must’ve offered up a special prayer because as I engage him, the sun’s fading rays illuminate and enhance his already astonishing profile.

I can’t even return his welcome. I think Hi, handsome. I form Hi, gorgeous. Nothing manifests. It’s then that I realize my game is weak. I’m warm inside and still shivering on the out. Wanting to be brave, I swing my hips, balancing atop the candied-colored heels. Wrong move. The heel gets caught in a crack of sand and grass. I’m propelled forward, into his waistline. Oh yeah, real smooth, Leah. He’s quick to capture me, setting my back against the car door. I reluctantly look up.

Nate’s eyes are glowing as much as the sunset in the distance. I have to shut mine, lowering my head in hopes of eluding him. Perhaps it’s the sky’s fault, but puddles of tears are forming in my eyes.

I don’t think this move has missed him. He lifts my face and places the back of his hand under my chin, setting a trap with his aura. I’m completely vulnerable to this incredibly stunning man. He places his palms on the sides of my face. He’s forcing me to look at him. Not only do I gaze into his full dark-brown eyes, I slip beyond, into a fortress of want and need. Just then, his lips touch mine. They tenderly caress my lip lining, even trailing nibble after nibble about my cheeks. He serenades the tip of my nose and up to my forehead. I close my lids as he gently plants his approval on each eye socket.

Nate finishes this worship of sorts, then returns to the initial landing site. This time, ummmm . . . This time, I grasp for more than just his lips, parting my mouth ever so slightly. I allow him entry into a part of me that I rarely offer to anyone.

Feature and Review: “Connor” by Dormaine G

Untitled-15 copy2 copy

About the Book2

“I, Connor, thought I was the average sarcastic teenager, living a normal boring life like everyone else with a crazy, annoying family. Wrong. I recently discovered that I have certain abilities. Abilities that link me to others like me, and others, unlike me, who want to cause me harm.
I found out this world is not what I thought, as well as the strange creatures in it, and that frightens me. I had to grow up fast and find the strength to defend myself from those beings who don’t want me here or who will take my strengths by any means necessary.
Throughout this craziness, I met a wonderful guy named Tony, who has abilities too. With him and five others like us we discover who we are and how we came to be.
Then there is Ronin, a being who is young, smart, and cunning. He is set on taking his revenge out on me yet I have no idea why.”

My Review

Connor is Dormaine G’s debut novel, and I must say that I am pleased with this author’s work. She did an awesome job in opening up her main character to readers. The author takes a seemingly regular teenager and makes the possibilities endless for her. As Connor comes into her own and discovers some fascinating “things” about herself and deals with regular issues that we’ve faced as teenagers ourselves, I could actually imagine myself as her. And it’s an exciting journey to see how a regular teenager acquires powers, maneuvers through. Moreover the supporting characters make the journey that much more intriguing. I like how the author took her time in allowing the plot to unfold, even setting up the story for the next book.
I also loved the concept and execution. The character of Connor is well-developed and practically jumps right off of the pages. She is likable, strong and highly relatable. Clearly, Dormaine G is in her element as she knows how to capture readers with skill, adding humor to this YA/Paranormal read. I hope that this is the first of many books in this series because there is so much possibility with Connor’s story.

About the Author

(I was able to ask Dormaine G several questions about her debut novel. Check it out below.)

Q: Connor is your debut novel, and the first of the series.

How important is it to provide a strong opening to a series?

A: I feel it is one of the key elements in telling a story. When you start off strong it pulls the reader in which is want you want in order for them to keep reading and wanting to know more. If you wait until the end for the climax then what will keep the reader interested.

Q: What do you believe to be the most significant characteristics of Connor?

A: She’s a survivor, adaptable and strong willed. She has her breaking moments but then she gets right back up and keeps fighting through her weaknesses. She doesn’t believe failure is an option. Plus, her sarcasm is a major characteristic of hers that tends to get her into trouble but what’s living without a little trouble.

Q: In your own words, what can readers expect from the entire series?

A: The series is about a diverse group of teenagers who discover just how special they are. Although, they each come from different backgrounds, they are one in the same in regards to their abilities. In saying that they, learn that the people in their lives are not as they appear and through betrayal learn who not to trust. Also, they realize that their safe haven is not so safe and must find a way to protect not only themselves but the world they call home and that sometimes rebelling is the only option even if no one stands behind you.

Q: When do you anticipate the remaining books will be released?

A: Connor (book 2) should be out late summer and book three the beginning of next year.

Three women; three stories on life, lessons and love. Three journeys towards the belonging place; three journeys back to self. Liliana Flint-Smith is starting out on her own. Leaving a dysfunctional family behind her and with nothing but a university degree in librarianship, Liliana moves to a remote village in the country. Different from everyone else in the town, she must find her place in a society that doesn’t take kindly to strangers. With the help of an old woman who lives in the flat next to her, Liliana begins to find herself and discovers it was never about her changing, but about learning to be herself. Estelle Wainwright is successful. She’s burning up the career ladder and has just made editor at a national women’s magazine. Her husband Joel is also carving out his niche as an architect and, together with son Corey, is the picture of success. Or are they? Journey with Estelle as she fights the tension within herself: work and home, career and husband, businesswoman and woman, and navigates through a crisis that will test the decisions she has made about how she lives her life. Jill Bridges is struggling to stay afloat. With the loss of her husband and her children busy with their own lives, she’s facing the prospect of a nursing home. But it’s her independence that makes her life worth living and she’ll be damned if she’ll bow to society’s plans for her. With a fierce will, Jill must find a way to triumph over old age and emerge into a life that still holds meaning.

Liliana raised one barely visible eyebrow. “Nothing’s wrong is it?” she said, starting to worry. She really needed to get through this degree. The money her grandmother had left her was starting to run out, and Mr Liazzorini from the pizza bar could only give her two shifts a week. She was tired of the endless baked bean sandwiches, eggs and mince, supplemented by loads of vegetables…because they were cheaper than meat. As she approached her final semester at university, she wanted out, and to begin her search for her ‘place’, she thought wryly as she fingered the corner of the books in her hands.
“Nothing’s wrong at all. In fact everything is fine Liliana. I just wanted to talk with you about an Honours’ year next year…in English. But more of that later when we’ve got that much needed coffee in our hands. I’ve only had one this morning and it’s nearly 11 o’clock!”
She linked arms with Liliana and half propelled her towards the coffee shop. Once they were seated, she took out a piece of paper which resembled Liliana’s academic transcript.
“I hope you don’t mind Liliana, but I was able to access your subject marks in this English major and I have to say they are impressive.”
Liliana’s eyes widened and she waited for the joke to come next. When it didn’t, her expression became one of puzzlement. “Ah…I’m not sure I know what you mean. I’ve not done that well in my English major.”
Hari smiled as she took a long sip of the soy latte she had ordered. Liliana was waiting for hers to cool, a little bit nervous of testing the heat against her lips in case it spilt.
“I’m telling you Liliana, your marks are better than good and I think you have the right attitude to take on Honours…you seem to understand what the writer is actually saying…the guts of it, if you know what I mean and not what academia wants you to think. You’re a complete natural and I think with a little bit of mentoring, you can make a place for yourself here.”
Liliana finally took a sip of her coffee and noticed with disappointment it had gone slightly cold. “Here? Oh I don’t think so…I mean I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but I don’t want to stay here.”
Hari looked slightly puzzled, and a little bit hurt, Liliana thought.
“I’m not sure I know what you mean Liliana. What I’m offering you is a career path to perhaps, one day, lecture at this university. Perhaps write yourself. I really think you’re capable of all this,” she said, waving her arm in an expansive gesture in the general direction of the university.
Liliana couldn’t help smile but she quickly forced it back.
“Thank you. I really mean that, but I can’t stay here. I’ve got to find my place and this is not it,” she said. She reached into her purse and took out $3 in silver coins. She placed them on the table and bit at her lip. She really was quite nervous at having to disappoint Hari Theodori.
Hari touched her arm again. “I understand Liliana, but promise me you will think it over.”
Liliana nodded before hurrying out of the coffee shop. She could still make the 301 back to Blacktown. Luckily the term was nearly over and if she arrived and departed Hari Theordori’s classes on time for the next week, she wouldn’t have to talk about the prospect of studying Honours.
